Behind the Book, a non-profit organization, works in New York City public schools, providing rich, innovative literacy programs in urban classrooms. Working with students from Pre-K to 12th grade, Behind the Book identifies books that speak to the students, then partners with teachers to create immersive curriculum units that bring the authors of those books into the classroom. Through a series of workshops, authors discuss their work and teach a genre of writing, encouraging students to see themselves as readers and writers.
Behind the Book seeks a volunteer website administrator to assist the Development Manager and graphic designer in updating and improving the organization's website. The administrator may work remotely, communicating with staff by email or phone, but preference will be given to New York City-based candidates.
Responsibilities include updating content, page layouts, and navigation features. You must be proficient in WordPress, and have working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
The time commitment will be an average of 1 hour a week for most tasks, with some longer periods necessary to complete larger projects. During the summer, when school programs are on hiatus, we may assign projects that require more time. The schedule is flexible.
To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter, and examples of your work with WordPress websites to Kara Matthews at kara@behindthebook.org. "Volunteer Website Administrator" should appear in the subject heading of your email.
