Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization serving high-needs New York City public schools, seeks volunteers to design and format books written and illustrated by our pre-K-12th grade students. Through our rich, innovative programs, which have a successful record of improving reading skills and nurturing motivated, engaged readers, students work with accomplished authors and illustrators to create their own writing and artwork that become the content for professionally published books.
Proficiency in InDesign is required. You'll be responsible for short-term projects completed under the guidance of our veteran art director. You can commit on a project-to-project basis and may work from home, but it's preferable that you live in or very near New York City.
This is an ideal opportunity for designers with an eye for layout, skill with the required software, a passion for education and literacy, and the desire to build a portfolio of professional work. See examples of previously published books in our gallery of student work.
To apply, please send a link to a portfolio or examples of your work, along with a message about your interest, to info@behindthebook.org. Please use "Book Designer" in your subject line.
